Last Friday our Lead Youth Worker, Lauren ran a healthy snack session at the ADHD support group in Sheerness. She spoke to the group about using smoked paprika with eggs, as it enhances the flavours. One of the members of the group cooked an omelette over the weekend and used paprika to enhance the flavour and she’s really happy that she attended the session and picked up some useful food tips. Thanks Liz for sharing your story.
Here she demonstrated how to make some healthy snack and the group got to try lots of new things.
All of the snacks were under 100 calories and are listed below:
1 teaspoon peanut butter with a sliced apple
30g popcorn kernels cooked without oil in a pan, just keep the pan moving so it doesn’t burn. For flavour add chilli powder, paprika powder or garam masala
Boiled egg dusted with smoked paprika
3 small dried figs stuffed with 1 tablespoon of ricotta cheese and sprinkled with cinnamon
2 tablespoons of pumpkin seeds (which you can get in Poundland) sprinkled with chilli powder, paprika, garam masala, onion granules or smoked paprika. Cook in larger batches and eat them throughout the week.
8 large olives in brine
12 medium baby carrots with 2 tablespoons hummus
1 cup grated carrots with 1 1/2 tablespoons of raisins and 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
1 rice cake (try brown rice!) with 2 teaspoons almond butter
1 handful raw spinach with 2 handfuls of sliced strawberries and 1 tablespoon of balsamic vinegar
The group really enjoyed the session and some of the favourite snacks tonight were dried figs with ricotta and cinnamon plus hummus with carrot batons. Hummus was tried by quite a few for the first time this evening. So it’s always great news when the team inspire others to try something new and then love it. Not only that Lauren was pleased to hear that the group leader Bev Nolker has now fallen in love with smoked paprika and will be adding it to her next shopping list.
If you would like Lauren to attend your group on the Isle of Sheppey and run a healthy food session then please contact the team on sheppeylifestyle@sheppeymatters.org.uk for more information about how to do this.
