Knitted and Crocheted poppies donated by the public are being turned into a poppy garen display inside the Sheppey Gateway in Sheerness High Street. Knitters across Kent are being asked to help turn the county red to pay tribute to all those killed or injured in wars as part of this year’s Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.
In Swale, the council is working with Sheppey Matters and the borough’s Gateways, libraries and community groups to create a garden of knitted and crocheted poppies.
The result so far has been fantastic with poppies coming in from Portsmouth to Poland, the response to our call out has seen young people, community groups and families coming together to take part and knit or crochet a poopy for this years Kent Knitted Poppy Parade supported by Swale Borough Council in aid of the RBLI.
Our Poppy Parade is part of a wider Gateway initative where across Kent local communities are joining in and decorating their Gateways for Remebrance Day 2017.
If you wish to join in or create a poppy then contact the Sheppey Matters office, their are workshops, patterns, wool and even opportunities to join in the creation of the poppy garden at the Sheppey Gateway in November.
FREE Patterns and double knit wool is available from the Sheppey Matters office upstairs at the Sheppey HLC or by calling 01795 585 335.
These latest poppies are from ex Sheppey resident, musician and artist worker Victoria Hunter, now resident in Portsmouth the call to support this fantastic project for her home town was too much for her to resit and Victoria has been hard at work when she is not at her day job, to do her bit and contirbute to the display.
Volunteers are needed to knit or crochet as many poppies as possible. Council Leader Cllr Andrew Bowles (Con) said: “This is such a creative community project and one we really hope residents will get involved with.”
We are still collecting poppies till the end of Ocotber so Sheppey Carry on Knitting we Need you!!
